Handbook
First Year
It is the department’s goal to provide financial aid to all students in good standing. In the first year, typical aid is through a fellowship, and includes: a monthly stipend, health fee, health insurance and tuition (for two courses a semester – plus the half-credit pedagogy training course in the spring).
Summer
During the summer between the first and second year, continuing students in good standing will receive a summer stipend (the amount per month should have been included in the offer letter you received from the Graduate School upon being offered admission) and health insurance. The Graduate School suspends payment of the health fee (for access to Brown's on-campus Health Services) for the summer.
Second Year
In the second year, those who are approved will teach an undergraduate workshop in the fall and the spring semesters. They will receive a stipend, health fee, health insurance and tuition (two courses a semester — plus the half-credit pedagogy seminar in the fall).
Student Loans
Guaranteed student loans are available through the university. You should visit Graduate Student Funding & Support for more details on this.
International Students
If you are not a US citizen, the Brown Financial Aid office recommends Mpower Financing as an outside option for a student loan.
Preparing your taxes
The Payroll Office handles the W-2 form which will include taxable wages for each calendar year. By the end of January, the W-2 is available to view/print on Workday. Once you log on, you will select Menu, Pay then View Tax Documents.
The Bursar Office handles the 1098-T forms as the forms are for Tuition paid throughout the year. For more information, visit the Bursar's Office FAQs regarding 1098-T forms.
