Eliot WeinbergerEliot Weinberger is a translator, essayist and critic.  He has published a study of Chinese poetry translation, 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei, has translated Unlock by exiled poet Bei Dao and is editor of Bei Dao’s selected poems, The Rose of Time. He is, in addition, editor of The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry, of two volumes of Kenneth Rexroth’s translations from the Chinese and Japanese, and general editor of a new series of Chinese literary and scholarly classics forthcoming from the Chinese University Press of Hong Kong.  Recipient of the first PEN/Kolovakos Award for his promotion of Hispanic literature in the U.S. and the only American literary writer to be awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle by the Mexican government, Weinberger has also translated Octavio Paz’s Collected Poems 1957 – 1987In Light of India, and Sunstone. Other Spanish-language translations include Vicente Huidobro’s Altazar, Xavier Villaurrutia’s Nostalgia for Death, and Jorge Luis Borges’ Seven Nights. His edition of Borges’ Selected Non-Fictions received the National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism.
