Ulf Stolterfoht, born in 1963 in Stuttgart, lives in Berlin. Poet and translator (of Gertrude Stein, J.H. Prynne, and Tom Raworth, among others). Most recent publications: fachsprachen XXXVII-XLV (Berlin: kookbook 2018) and Neu-Jerusalem (Berlin: kookbook 2015). The first four volumes of his Fachsprachen (or Terminology-) series were published between 1998 and 2009 with Urs Engeler Editor (Basel). The inital volume of the series was translated in 2007 by Rosmarie Waldrop as Lingos I-IX (Providence: Burning Deck Press). Stolterfoht is chief editor at Brueterich Press (Berlin); he is a member of the Darmstädter Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung as well as of the Berliner Akademie der Künste. In 2008 he received the prestigious Peter-Huchel-Prize for his booklength poem Holzrauch über Heslach. More recent translations of his work into English include the fourth part of Holzrauch über Heslach, published as Nine Drugs (Cambridge: Face Press 2016), and The Amme Talks (New York: Triple Canopy 2018), written remains of Stolterfoht’s encounter, in 2003 in Berlin, with a chatbot named Amme [wet nurse]. For one week he interrogated Amme about the nature of authorship and language. Stolterfoht’s experimental poetry tests the – porous – border of languages and words by undoing the coherence of terminological tools and mechanisms. His poems allow for strange encounters with what seems to be either foreign or familiar in our everyday encounter with speech (and silence), words and texts.
