Richard Tuttle

Writers Online

Visual artist Richard Tuttle was born in Rahway, New Jersey, and lives and works in New Mexico and New York.  Sometimes described as an artistic maverick, Tuttle uses a wide variety of media – paper, rope, string, cloth, wire, twigs, cardboard, bubble wrap, nails, Styrofoam, plywood – to create small, eccentric, playful objects that challenge his audience’s sense of what art “should be.”  His work is influenced by calligraphy, poetry, and language, and in addition to his sculptures, he has also created artist’s books, exhibit catalogues, and prints.  Recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, he has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; ICA Philadelphia; Kunsthaus Zug, Switzerland; Centro Galego de Arte Contempránea, Santiago de Compostela;  the Museu Serralvesin, Porta, Portugal; and SFMoMA.
