MOTOYUKI SHIBATA (b. 1954) taught American literature and literary translation for twenty-five years at the University of Tokyo. He translates American literature, runs the literary journal MONKEY, and edits the English-language literary journal MONKEY New Writing from Japan. He has translated such contemporary authors as Paul Auster, Rebecca Brown, Stuart Dybek, Steve Erickson, Brian Evenson, Laird Hunt, Kelly Link, and Steven Millhauser, as well as classic writers including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, and Jack London. His awards include the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities (2005) and the Waseda University Tsubouchi Shoyo Award (2017).
