Habib Tengour

Writers Online

Habib Tengour is a poet and anthropologist. His work oscillates between imaginative exploration and surrealist play, on the one hand, and the lyric-epic tradition in Arabic poetics, on the other. Since the early 1980s, he has been recognized as a leader of the new generation of French-language Maghrebian writers. Known also for his prose, he has published over twenty volumes of poetry, fiction, theater pieces, and essays. His work has been translated into many languages, including English, German, Italian, and Arabic, and he is, himself, a translator of poetry from Arabic and English. He was awarded the Dante Prize for European poetry in 2016 and, since 2018, he has been the editor of the "Poetry of the World" collection at the publishing house Apic in Algiers.
