Introductory/Intermediate Workshops & Lit Courses

During pre-registration, students may register for courses depending on certain factors—some are open based on class year, others are based on declared concentration.

After pre-registration, instructor permission is needed to gain entry and/or access to the waitlist. No one will receive such permission until lotteries are run on the first day of the semester — for spring 2026, lotteries take place on Wed., 21 January.

In order to seek entry via lottery, write to the instructor in January (see below for details) via the electronic mail address provided below at that time. For LITR 100, 610 and LITR 710 sections, only First Year undergraduates at Brown and RISD may apply. 

For LITR 110, LITR 210 and LITR 310 sections, all undergraduates at Brown and RISD may apply.

Deadlines

To participate in the lottery all requests must be received from 3 September through 2 pm on Wednesday, 9 September 2026. Requests received after that hour on 9 September will only be given consideration should space become available. All requests made before the deadline will be given equal weight when the lottery is held.

Note: All students with permission must attend the first class to hold a place in the class. Those on the wait list should follow the instructions provided by the instructor.
