Literary Arts

Forrest Gander is a writer and translator with degrees in geology and English literature. Concerned largely with the way the self is revised and translated in encounters with the foreign, his book Core Samples from the World was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.  He is the author of many other books of poetry, including Redstart:  An Ecological Poetics and Science and Steepleflower, as well as of novels The Trace and As a Friend, and of an essay collection, A Faithful Existence.  His translations include Alice Iris Red Horse:  Poems of Gozo Yoshimasu, Then Come Back:  the Lost Neruda Poems, and Fungus Skull Eye Wing:  Selected Poems of Alfonso D'Aquino. Gander has received awards from the Library of Congress, the Guggenheim, Whiting, NEA and Howard Foundations.

He retired from teaching at the end of the 2017-2018 Academic Year.
